Top questions

Once you click “apply” on the main grants page, you will be asked to log into your CMA member account. Then, you will be directed to our application platform where you can begin the submission process. Stage 1 in the application process will require you to fill out a short questionnaire and submit a 90-second video (see tips & tricks ). If you are short-listed as a finalist, you will be contacted for stage 2 where you will be required to complete a longer written application.

Yes. The deadline for the stage 1 video submissions is March 28, 2019 11:59 pm (ET). All members who submit a video application will be notified if they are selected to move ahead to the second stage.

The Joule Innovation Council: a team of physician innovators, skilled business leaders and consumer representatives will evaluate all grant submissions.


Yes. All initiatives must be led by a CMA member or have a CMA member in a significant role on the team (ex. Co-Founder, Chief Medical Officer, etc.)

No. The application must be submitted by the CMA member who is applying for the grant.

Yes. All non-recipients from previous years can re-apply this year with the same, improved initiative.

Yes. Applicants may apply twice with two very distinct initiatives.

No. Each recipient can only receive one grant..

No. If you received a grant in the 2018 grant program, you are not eligible to apply again until next year.

Grant categories

In the application process, you will answer a short questionnaire which will help determine which grant category you are eligible for. You can only apply to one grant category with the same initiative. If you have questions about the category you’ve been assigned, please contact us jouleinnovation@cma.ca.

To be considered for the Emerging Physician Innovator grant, you must first apply to either the Health care solutions or Access to care grant categories. If you are short-listed for second stage review but don’t end up receiving a grant in one of those two categories, you will be considered for a Emerging Physician Innovator grant.

Yes. Your practice status at the time of submission is what will be considered.

The current application process is such that all applications must either be entered into the Health care solutions or Access to care grant categories. If a student or resident applicant is moved into the second stage of review, they will be considered for an Emerging Physician Innovator grant.

No. These grants are only available to medical students and residents at time of application.

Francophone applicant questions

Yes. All grant program information is available in both official languages on the Joule website and in the application platform―which is set up to display the default language of your browser. To toggle between languages, please use the French/ English language button on the top right for the Joule website or the French/ English language link in the application platform.

Yes. Submissions are accepted in both official languages. So that all applications can be assessed equally, we will translate your video for the English-speaking members of the Joule Innovation Council. Although it is not a requirement, we do accept English transcripts―if you have one available, please send it along when you apply.

Stage 1 application questions

The video should be a MP4, MOV, AVI, MPG or WMV file format. MP4 is the preferred format. If you are experiencing issues uploading your video to the platform, please contact us at jouleinnovation@cma.ca.

No. All videos must be submitted through the application platform on the spot or uploaded with a pre-recorded video file.

Once your submission has been received, you will see a “Thank you” confirmation webpage and will receive a confirmation email.

Yes. All applicants will be notified whether they are moving on to the next stage or not.

Stage 2 application questions

The next step, stage 2, is to complete a longer written application. If your initiative has been selected, you will be provided with further information.

After you complete the stage 2 form, the Joule Innovation Council will meet to select the 2019 Joule Innovation grant recipients. Stage 2 finalists who are not selected to receive a grant will be notified.

Grant recipient questions

No. Should you be awarded a Joule Innovation Grant, 100% of the equity remains with you―the physician and/or physician-led team. If you are interested in partnering with Joule in some manner down the road, equity could become part of the discussion. But this would have no relation to the Joule Innovation grant program.

Yes, all Joule Innovation Grants are subjected to tax. Whether the grant is paid directly to the CMA Member, affiliated institution, corporation or not-for-profit, Canadian Revenue Agencies tax regulations apply. Should you receive a grant, you will need to include it on your year-end tax return. Joule will provide you with the necessary documentation to do this.
